Title I Parent Involvement Policy

The administration, faculty, and staff of Benjamin Franklin Elementary School recognize the importance of parental involvement in the goal of academic excellence for every child. This policy will serve as a guide for the involvement of parents.  Working together as a team, parents and the school staff will prepare students to become lifelong learners.

Benjamin Franklin Elementary School will:

1. Involve parents in the planning, review, and improvement of Benjamin Franklin Elementary School’s Parent Involvement Policy

   • The Parent Involvement Policy will be distributed to all parents during the Fall Open House

   • The Parent Advisory Council annual fall meeting will suggest revisions and improvements during this meeting.

2. Convene an annual meeting to inform parents of the school’s participation in the Title I program and to explain the requirement of the program and the parent’s right to be involved. The school will invite to this meeting all parents of children participating in Title I, Part A programs (participating students), and will encourage them to attend.

3. Schedule parent meetings/activities, including parent conferences, at different times during the day. The school will convene the meeting at a convenient time to parents, and will offer a flexible number of additional parental involvement meetings, such as in the morning or evening, so that as many parents as possible are able to attend.

4. Pay reasonable and necessary expenses associated with parent involvement activities, including transportation, child care, or home visit expense to enable parents to participate in school-related meetings and training sessions.

5. Schedule regular meetings to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children, and respond to any such suggestions as soon as possible.

6. Take the following actions to involve parents in the joint development of its school parental involvement plan.

   • Solicit input from parents at parent-teacher conferences, the annual meeting and through written communications.

   • Provide copies of the policy to parents and provide information for checking the policy online, in parents’ native language when necessary.

   • Inform parents about the policy and the website in the Title 1 introduction letter.

      

7. Provide parents of participating children with timely information about the Title I program

   • An informational letter explaining their child’s involvement in the Title I program, which will be sent to the parents of all Title I students before the end of the first marking period.

   • Explain the Title I program during the annual meeting.

8. Provide parents of participating children with a description and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet.

   • The school web-site provides parents with information presented in each classroom.

   • The student handbook provides parents with information about assessment.

   • The reporting progress system is standards based so parents always known how their child is progressing towards standards.

   • Parent-Teacher conferences will provide an opportunity for parents to ask questions about student assessments and achievement.

   • School level and district assessments will be discussed during regularly held events and Parent Advisory Council meetings.

      

9. Assist parents in understanding the State’s academic content standards and  student achievement standards, local assessments and how to monitor a child’s progress and work with teachers to improve the achievement of their children.

   • Standards are posted in each classroom.

   • Parent-teacher conferences are held twice a year and anytime a parent requests a conference.

   • Report cards and Title 1 progress reports are distributed quarterly.

   • Parent forum meetings provide parents with varied information about standards and assessments.

10. Provide parents, if requested, opportunities for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children, and respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicably possible.

    • Monthly Parent Advisory Council meetings will be held at various times during the day to formulate discussions.

    • An anonymous suggestion box placed in the lobby provides an opportunity for anonymous suggestions, which are reviewed weekly during Leadership Team meetings.

11. Develop a school-parent compact jointly with parents, which will outline how parents, the entire school staff, and students, will share in the responsibility for improved student achievement.

    • The Parent Compact will be reviewed annually during the parent meeting.

       

12. Provide materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve their children’s achievement.

    • Parents are invited to activities such as “Family Math Game Night” and other literacy opportunities.  These activities provide the opportunity for parents to interact with their children in a positive environment of success.

    • Parents who attend the Annual Title 1 meeting are presented with suggested activities for working with their child at home.

    • Workshops are scheduled to train parents in ways to interact and continue.
